When To Call A Technician For Emergency AC Repair

Some air conditioning (AC) issues can wait a day or two before getting solved. For example, you can survive a day or two with slight uneven cooling in the house. However, some issues require prompt intervention. Below are some of the AC issues for which you should call an emergency technician.

Serious Electrical Problems

Electrical problems are dangerous for two main reasons. First, electrical problems in the AC can trigger an electrical fire that can cause further damage or even burn down the whole house. For example, if the AC motor is acting up, you risk an electrical fire if you continue using the AC in that state. Secondly, even minor electrical problems can cause further damage if not rectified fast.

No Cooling During a Heat Wave

An AC that doesn't produce adequate cooling when the temperature is just slightly uncomfortable is bad, but it is not an emergency. However, if the temperature is soaring and your AC is broken down, then you need a technician to remedy the situation fast. Remember that a heat wave is not just an inconvenience; it can also trigger multiple health effects. Children, the elderly, invalids, and pets are particularly vulnerable to extreme temperatures.

Displaced Outdoor Unit

The condenser unit, which sits outside the house, is usually heavy enough and properly anchored, so it's not easily affected by the weather. However, an extreme flood or storm can move the condenser unit out of its usual position. Such displacements risk damaging the delicate condenser fins, electrical connections, and refrigerant lines, among other things. Operating your AC in such a state is dangerous; you need to get a technician as soon as possible.

Serious Refrigerant Leak

Refrigerant leaks usually occur through small holes on the refrigerant lines. In some cases, however, a refrigerant leak can occur rapidly and deplete the refrigerant after a short while. An example would be if a tree falls on the AC unit or someone severs the refrigerant lines during construction. In such a case, you need to contact a technician urgently. Refrigerant depletion can create AC damage, environmental pollution, and adverse health effects in members of the affected household.

Loud, Unusual Noises

Lastly, you also need emergency AC repairs if the system is making strange or unusual noises. Noises, other than the usual hum, mean there is a malfunction in the system. It might mean mechanical damage, electrical malfunction, obstructions, or loose parts. In such a case, professional diagnosis and solution are necessary before further damage occurs.
